Osteopenia
Osteopenia is a medical condition that is a step towards Osteoporosis. The bone density is decreased and therefore the bone is becoming weaker. If you have Osteopenia then you have an increased risk of Osteoporosis. WHAT CAN I DO FOR MY BONES ?It is recommended that you should: Watch your calcium and vitamin D intake. Perform weight-bearing and resistance training exercises. If you smoke try to stop. Limit your alcohol consumption. "Recommended Calcium intake"19-49 years 1000mg 50+ 1200mg "Recommended vitamin D intake"Under 50 years 400-800 IU Over 50 years 800-1000 IU Depending on your individual needs and physical condition the above may vary for you. As always check with your doctor. Eat foods that are rich in the above vitamins. You will need to have a Dexa scan if you want to find out what your bone density is like. Dexa stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. A regular x-ray cannot detect the small amounts of bone loss that may be taking place. You will need to have already lost 20% of your bone mass for the x-ray to detect Osteoporosis. Back to Pilates and Osteoporosis
